Hong Kong racegoers finally got to see what all the hype was about when Classic Unicorn (Per Incanto-Grace and Eva by Stravinsky) made his long awaited debut at Sha Tin on Sunday and last December’s 12 length Avondale trial winner lived-up and some to his private reputation with a class record win over 1000m in 55.15 despite racing greenly.

Unraced until Sunday, the Chris So Way Yin trained 3YO had shown his new connections plenty of his untapped talent in trackwork leading into his debut.

“Before they sent him to Hong Kong they told me he won by 12 lengths in a trial,” So said. “We knew the horse was impressive, I haven’t had a horse like this for a long time.

“He needs to learn more, he’s not ready. He’s very green, he was going this way and that until Zac (Purton) used the whip to straighten him.”

Bred by Viv and Ralph Fauvel, Buzz and Susie Williams and LA, Classic Unicorn was a $40k purchase by Ric Wylie Bloodstock from the LA draft at the 2017 Karaka Select Sale.

Classic Unicorn joins a growing number of promising 3YO’s by Per Incanto in the former British colony. Glenealy Generals (Per Incanto-Grey Swallow by Pentire ) has won two of his three starts, while Paul O’Sullivan’s Duke Wai (Per Incanto-Swan Lake by Green Perfume) has won and placed from just four starts.
