LA Bred Stakeswinner Out To Go One Better In Derby

Tuesday, 15 October 2019 15:50

LA’s hopes of going one better in this years VRC Derby were buoyed after Craftsmanship (Savabeel- Aspinal by Pins), a horse bred and sold by the farm, produced a strong staying performance to land the Listed (1800m) Hill Smith Stakes at Morpethville on Saturday. And certainly anyone believing in omens should have a ticket on the colt in the time honored classic.

In 2004 LA took a similarly outstanding yearling to Karaka. Purchased by Les Samba for $360,000, Gorky Park (Montjeu-Steluta by Defensive Play), as he was subsequently named, went onto run second in the 2007 VRC Derby to Efficient.

Roll forward to Karaka 2018 where the LA bred Craftsmanship caught the eye of Duncan Ramage and Mick Price who bought the dark bay colt for the same price, $360,000.

Craftsmanship, who was making just his fourth start on Saturday in a career which included a win on his seasonal reappearance last month, is a half sister to the 4YO O’Reilly mare Mummentum who has won twice for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees in four starts. Whatever happens on 2 November at Flemington, Mummentum is going to be a very welcome addition the LA broodmare band when her own arcing career concludes.

Sound, talented, well educated horses
