Williams Family 80 Years

Saturday, 01 August 2020 02:26

Masterton’s Little Avondale Stud, proudly one of NZ’s oldest family owned thoroughbred farm’s, are celebrating 80 years in the business. It’s honour role is hard to better and includes their stallions winning the Dewer Trophy, as leading Stallion in Australia and NZ 4 times, breeding the Melbourne Cup winner Straight Draw, Caulfield Cup winner Ilumquh as well as many other Derbies and Oaks.

They sold the first ever $100,000 yearling in Australasia which was trained by the great TJ Smith and went on to be the stakes winning Gold Pulse. They also struck up a long relationship with Bart Cummings who named his stables Leilani Lodge after the successful mare was purchased from the Williams. Leilani won a multitude of Group I races including the AJC Oaks, Caulfield Cup, Mackinnon Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Australian Cup and CF Orr Stakes.

The stud is an envious position to add further chapters to the rich history of the NZ thoroughbred with five recent Group 1’s winners having been bred by Little Avondale along with their leading stallion Per Incanto accumulating 20 stakes winners in the last 21 months. Exciting newcomer Time Test, by the Champion Dubawi, has generated enormous support from many of NZ’s most successful breeders, has his first Southern Hemisphere yearlings sell this summer, and while Nadeem maybe in the twilight of his career, the son of Redoute’s Choice continues to churn out black-type winners with two new stakes winners already in 2020.

It is with a sense of confidence but also a real sense of pride that studmaster Sam Williams, the third generation of the Williams family to run the farm, and wife Catriona, look forward to sharing their passion, and further enhancing the Te Parae and Little Avondale name over the years to come.

Good genuine personalities, hard workers but plenty of fun
